Being a Student at Duke

I wasn’t a formal student of Duke University, but luckily, I got a chance to experience how a college student’s life could be at Duke for a month.

A Brief Introduction of Duke University

Duke University, located in Durham, NC, is a private non-profit university which ranked 7th due to U.S. New & World Report National University ranking. Trinity College was the first part of the amazing school, which started in 1838 and named Trinity College in 1859. Due to the financial support by Washington Duke, and his son's request, the school changed its name to Duke University. The financial support helped Duke University to expand -- the original campus, East Campus, was rebuilt while the new campus, WestCampus, was built with Duke Chapel at its center. In addtion, if you visit Duke Chapel, you'll see the bronze statue of Washington Duke standing in front of the chapel.

Walking around West Campus, you could enjoy the amazing beauty of Gothic buildings and the quietness from the woods and grasses. Squirrels are running around, chasing each other. Birds are singing on the trees. Students are walking around, talking with each other. It's different from walking in East Campus -- perhaps because I went to there in summer, when most of students were away, and in the evening -- students were back to their dorm. There weren't too many people there, and thus you could feel a sense of peace in the country side. Buildings in East Campus looked friendlier than, not as serious as, one of West Campus. Squirrel were as cute and energetic as those in West Campus, and you could see the Blue Devil on top of some buildings on both campus.

Duke is also a school that has a strong background of sports. There were kids from primary/middle/high schools' sports team coming to visit and gain experience from players in Duke School team. For example, my classmates Marshall, who is one player in Duke Basketball team, gave a speech to the little visitors one night. This love of sports wasn't something that someone who knows little about sports can understand, but I really felt this excitement at that time.

比如说,我的同学Marshall(他是杜克校队的一员)就在某天晚上给这些小朋友做了个演讲。

Arrival & Orientation

Duke University is located in Durham, NC, which is a beautiful city on the east coast of the US. My trip started at Shanghai. I fight to San Francisco, CA, at first, and then transfer to Raleigh/Durham, NC.

The first thing I did (and had to do) was to register at the Main Office so that I could get my dorm key and (temporary) student card, which was used to buy commodities on Campus (mostly food & drink), and the university would give each student of the program $20 every day. Then I went to my dorm room to set my bedding & bags with my RA's help. RA means Resident Assistant. In the summer program, every participant had his/her own RA. RAs' mission was taking care of their resident group, not just telling them what activities were going to be organized the following day, but also doing their best to help the students with their academic problems.

There were two orientations on the first weekend. The first one was Academic orientation, which was basically about rules for our day class and evening class. For example, one must finish his/her assignment on time as well as the other college students in class. Well, did I mention that we were having classes not only with some other students from this program but also some college students at Duke University? For instance, in my class, Public Speaking, there were 6 students from this program (3 Chinese students and 3 US students) and 8 students from Duke University. Officially, we high school students were treated the same as those college students, but there are certainly some differences. My professor used to hold a party at her house one night after finishing the semester, but us high school students could not go to the party without an RA bring us there and back, thus, the party was unfortunately cancelled. The other orientation was Residence Ordination. It was about how our daily life would be during the month at Duke, along with rule we need to obey. As it might seem boring to have these orientations, there were sparkles of ideas that shook me a lot. "Education is the way that can change the world. Wars cannot be stopped (forever) by money or power. But education can make the world better and better." "I am here being a teacher because I believe in it." These things certainly are not as clear for me as when I was in the hall listening to the presentation. But I still feel being shook and moved now.

Public Speaking

As I said, I was there to take a college course -- Public Speaking. It was a challenging and strange course for me anyway. The most (or least) difficulty was language. English for me is the second language, which means that, usually I need to translate Chinese --my language of thinking -- to English to deliver my ideas. The process of translation really slowed my speed of answering questions. Another thing I needed to overcome -- and everyone who's going to speak needs to deal with -- was the fear, the nervousness of speaking. In this course, we learnt some tips to help us fix the problem, and these tricks really helped me a lot.

I never be a person who's good at words and making friends with others. So, for me, the most fascinated time was class. We shared our experience, ideas and opinions in class. We gave comments to each other as most as we could after one gave his/her presentation. We were learning from each other, not just from the professor. I should quote one word for Prof. Byerly "You are learning from me, from your classmates, and I am learning from you too. How amazing it is!"

I really feel that choosing Public Speaking was the greatest decision I've even made. The primary goal for me to take part in this program was to know what "American College Life" is like. Due to the special requirement of this class, we didn't have too much difficult assignments. What we did was a few presentations, mostly done by oneself while there was one group work. The only thing that might be considered as paper work should be the final notes collection, which we needed hand it on the last Friday. For the rest time in class, we watched some TED talks, and then talked about the advantage and lack of the videos. There isn't a formula for public speaking -- everyone has his/her style. We still needed to know some "common sense", however. Due to the audience, there will be things called conventions.

Here's some things I experienced that I think they can somehow represent "American Education":

1.Rules of class are mostly decided by the professor(s), but the professor(s) might be willing to take students' opinions into concern.

2.Think by oneself, think out of the box.

3.Classmates and Professors are come from different background, but we/they still share something in common.

4.Respect.

5.Hard Working.

6.Honesty.

At this point, I'd like to talk about my evening class a little bit. For the first week, the class was same for all students in this program -- academic writing. It was hold in order to help us in academic writing, of course. Not only because there were about half of students come out of the US, but also due to the fact that high school level writing is different from college level writing. Two things I remember clearly were academic "cheating" and word choosing. For the detail of these, in case you might interested in them, there's a course offered also by Duke University called English Composition I: Achieving Expertise. The next three weeks' evening class was College Prep., which was basically about how to choose a college, how to apply to the colleges, and how to choose a major. There's a similar online course offered by UPenn called Applying to U.S. Universities, which I strongly recommend if you don't know or still want to know more about U.S. University Application.

Activities

U.S. universities always have hundreds of activities, as we heard. Although we couldn't take part in the college students' clubs, Duke Summer College Program prepared a number of activities for us. Daily activities varied from day to day -- we had activities for sports lovers such as playing soccer/basketball/bowling or watching the World Cup; there were Campus exploring activities like visiting Nasher Art Museum or Sarah Garden; some DIY like sushi-making and dumpling-making or tattoo drew girls attention every time they appeared on the board.

There were also some big events -- the trip to Washington DC, local baseball game watching and American Dance Festival.

Let's talk about baseball game first. It said that last year someone did a proposal during the rest time, well, this year we just had some audiences (especially kids) playing funny games with baseball, which still interesting to see.

American Dance Festival was also interesting. It was a dance performance. 3 section in total -- the first one was a story about dogs, the second one seemed to have something to do with time and party (unfortunately, I didn't really understand it), and the third one was a story about a lord and his servants.

The most exciting one must be the trip to Washington DC. It took about 4 hours to get there and another 4 hours to go back -- only a few hour left to explore different museums and memorials. We got a ticket for the tour bus (red), which could bring us to most significant tour places. I took pictures of Capital Hill and got off at Space Museum. It was really crowded, probably due to the fact that it was Saturday. In the museum, I took a close look at how commercial plane got started and how plane post improved. Then I went to the National Mall to meet my friends -- they wanted to go shopping instead of visiting museums, so they took the bus to the "mall". However, the National Mall is not a shopping mall. I guessed they'd left to other places when I got there. I met a new group and we went to Holocaust Memorial Museum. The most impressive part was the exhibition in that museum calledRemember the Children: Daniel's Story. That was just likeAnnie's Daily, talking about how Jewish suffered during World War II -- how happy the kids' life was, how everything changed and got worse. Wasn't it a better way to talk about how scaring a war was? Not to make the crowd be angry at the country who started the war, but to realize that the hurt a war can leave and so make every adult, every child hold a heart of peace. Time ran out, so I just took some photos beside White House and then went back to the station.

Talent show was on the last Friday of the program. Some students played instruments and some sang their songs. Some danced very well. For me, other than my own performance -- singing the songFar Away from Home, there were some really impressing ones. A group of boys did Gangnan Style, which at the end, lots of boys jumped on the stage to dance with them. Two boys performed "how to get a flying grape" which was really funny to see. Some Chinese boys tried to singIn My Song(我的歌声里), but…it was a good attempt anyway.

In addition, there were two university visit tour. I went to UNC, Chapel Hill at that time. UNC, Chapel Hill is also a high-ranked university with beautiful campus. Because it's a public university, said the RA who drove us there, there are about 80% students fromNorth Carolina State, and only about 1-2% are international students. Historically, it was the first state university in the U.S. UNC, Chapel Hill has a lot of fun story with Duke University. They has been opponent for a long time. There's even a book sold in UNC, Chapel Hill store can show this.

Daily Life

Duke University is surround by Duke Forest, but it has a very convenient transport system. Students can take Bus 6 or 6+ to Durham station, and take Bus 5 to South Point -- the local shopping mall. It may not be as good as Outlets, but a fan of clothes can find most s/he wants there. A book lover can go to Barnes & Noble. If you need something to decorate you house, there are enough stores for you. A movie fan can find current posting movies in the cinema. Even you are none of above, you can still enjoy various food there.

If you live on the West Campus but don't want to go too far on weekends, Bryan Center can offer a lot things you want -- McDonald's, Panda Express (certainly not as good as Chinese food in China), Au Bon Pain, Joe Van Gogh, etc. University Store provides different kinds of clothes, stationery and there is a computer store!

Not enough? Take a campus bus to the East Campus, you just need 10-min walk to 9th Street. There are supermarket like whole food, book stores, restaurants, three or four café and even some pubs -- the one thing needed to be noticed was that you cannot use your student card there.

One can enjoy his/her life in dorm -- laundry room and vending machines are on the first floor; leave from second floor, there are a parking lot and a lawn. One can go through the woods to the Chapel in a pleasant afternoon, and get back at night with fireflies. How great life can be there!
